In this talk I will discuss some of the work we have undertaken to understand the built environment in neighborhoods in Lagos, Nigeria and Johannesburg, South Africa. In Lagos we look at the problem of residency while in Johannesburg we are interested in the question of how the city has evolved since the change in residence laws in 1994.
