The transition to renewables as well as the electrification of mobility and heating are disrupting the energy system. New challenges include meeting the increasing electricity demand with decentralized renewable energy production, upgrade the existing network infrastructure to ensure the required quality of supply and reduce the CO2 emissions in order to reach the climate goals for 2050. 
AI & ML could enable a smoother transition and disrupt the existing energy systems. In this talk the challenges and opportunities of the future energy systems will be presented.
