I will attempt to provide a holistic picture of AI and Education with a particular focus on its potential to help us address some of the major challenges in building sustainable societies. I
will argue that the interdisciplinary research from the learning sciences has helped us understand a great deal about the way that humans learn, and this same body of research must now be used to better inform the development of AI technologies for use in education. I will substantiate the talk with examples from my recent research projects in which AI technologies and multimodal data are used to interpret and support complex social and emotional skills in digital and physical hybrid spaces.
