Track / Overview

Since the 18th century and the industrial revolution, technology has constantly replaced workers with machines, destroying old jobs and creating new ones. While new technological innovations increased productivity, wages and living standards, they also brought their lot of social disruption. Today, fears are widespread that the current wave of technological change, linked with artificial intelligence and robots, will upset the jobs and lives of many workers in affluent countries. Our track discusses this fear on the basis of cutting-edge research and applications from academia, industry and government. It does so by bringing together scholars who assess the macro-impact of automation on employment with representatives of industry who work on micro-applications of AI in job search and political decision-makers who are designing employment policy for the years to come.
